Sara de Freitas is an international educator, specialising in the innovative use of digital technologies. Following from a PhD in information science, and first role at Birkbeck College, University of London, as a Learning and Skills Research Fellow, Sara has held Professorships in immersive environments, digital education, and digital technologies, focusing on how technologies can be best adapted to human behaviour and purpose.
Working usually in cross- institutional and disciplinary teams, Sara has three strings to her bow: Research, Leadership and Policy Development. As a Researcher, she has supported the establishment of three UK Research Institutes and led on national and international research clusters and networks in ICT, Games and Digital research, attracting significant funding, and holding UKRI, EU and other research and development projects. Work is collated in books, a book series and journal and conference papers (H-index 57).
As an Entrepreneurial Leader, Sara has held Directorial and Executive roles in higher education as Director of Research and Pro/Deputy Vice Chancellor delivering large institution-wide transformation, policy, quality assurance and curriculum programmes and embedding learning, teaching and student services, in Australia and the UK. Executive roles included a stint as a Company Director and School Lead in an AIM-listed PLC company delivering full online education in two schools and a sixth form college (Key Stages 2-5). As a Policy and Strategy Advisor, she has consulted with a wide range of governments, universities, and businesses, to help shape their institutional and sectoral research, strategy, policy and business practices.
